Project 3: Character Modeling

As I am a fan of Haywood Miyazaki’s movies, Totoro is one of my favourite character in all the movies, especially the famous raining scene.

First of all, I have inserted Totoro blueprint I have found online and I have the rough shape according to it. The blueprint picture is a bit more skinny than how Totoro actually looked like so I have made it fatter so it looked more cute. When it comes to make the hand in front of it body as it should be holding the umbrella while another hand is resting at the side. Lastly, I have coloured it with suitable roughness and also the beige colour and gray marks at the stomach.

Besides that, I modelled the umbrella that it should be holding and applied the material at the same time.

Also, as it was a raining scene, I modelled a raindrop at the edge of the leaf. For the shading node I actually did not know how to make water property so I have searched for tutorial and applied it.

Other than that, I proceeded with the background setting which is the floor. Before, applying the ground, I have created a surface that is not flat which aimed to imitate the uneven surface on the ground.

After that, in order to create the forest scene, I have added more plants and trees from the botanical library assets. I have applied different types of plants, duplicated and placed them nicely.

Moreover, there is only some soft light since it is at the night. The lighting is basically warm tone like the night street lamp.

Last but not least, Totoro must be fluffy! I have tried so many times of creating the fur like the set hair tool but I still can’t make it. I decided to go with the particle tool which has the hair particle. I have also tried a lot of times of making it successfully and finally I did it! A fluffy Totoro :D

Feedback

I have shown my work physically to Mr Kamal before 1 week of the submission and Mr Kamal said that there was not much problem, for the background I could make it the same tone but blueish.

Reflection

It has been a tough time of doing this assignment as I have never tried character modelling before. I have struggled and faced a lot of issues that I need to try again and again to solve it. I have gained a lot of new techniques through this assignment like sculpt mode and the particle tool.

After Project 2 has been my no1 baby, Totoro is my no2 baby. I feel so proud of myself after completing this project because I cannot believe I can make it at the start. After trying it, I realised that it actually was not that scary as I thought. Now I am so excited and can’t wait to challenge Advanced 3D Modeling!!
