Task 3: Development & Design

Following the visual analysis, I will now develop a design based on one of the sketches I have done in Task 2. Out of 3 sketches, I decided to choose sketch #1 as I like this sketch the most and I think the composition is the best. I believe that this sketch can express the meaning I want to convey through this drawing most clearly.

Chosen Sketch (Sketch #1)

Refining sketch to Line Art in Procreate
After deciding which sketch I chose to proceed on, I started to refine it from sketch by redrawing it with clean lines and also applying colours to the lines that match with the characters so that black colour lines would not be stand out after I have coloured it.

Colouring Progress in Procreate
Firstly, I started by filling up the basic colours of the characters, I choose warm colour for "Spring" while "Winter" has a cooler tone. Not only the difference of tone in hair and clothes, the skin tone also has a slight difference as "Spring" has yellowish tone while "Winter" has a reddish tone. The warm and cold colours have created contrast among them. After that, I proceeded with the shading on every objects so that it does not looked that flat.

Besides that, the next step will be adding the highlight part of each parts as it could have more levels of colours and making the characters more solid. As “Spring" is touching the glowing ice ball, her face and body will be illuminated more and reflected the lights. Furthermore, there are also details added on the clothes which make the clothes of both of them are shining and have texture.
Fig 2.5 Adding highlight and details

In order to make the characters solid, I have applied brighter colour on the skin as well as hair so that it shows that the light reflects in a more natural way. And the layer of applying these colours was set to "Add" which the colours in this layer will be brighten and saturated so that it will be connected smoother.

For the ice ball, I would need to add some details to make it looked delicate enough as it will need to have a lot of snow inside. I have applied some snow texture brush in order to help me create the small particles. Furthermore, to make the ice ball glowing, I have use a glowing brush while adjusting the layer options to "add" at the same time so that it will brighten the colours.

Also, although I have drawn the flowers using brush, but I adjusted its shapes according to the perspective to make sure it match with the character's movement as well.

Comparison of White and Black background
When I almost finished the drawing, I realised that actually white colour background cannot really see the details of the characters and the characters are not stand out. Therefore, I set the background as black colour and it turns out very well. The shining and glowing particles that are more obvious make the whole artwork more lively.

Rationale
I have named my artwork as "The Touch of the Seasons" which basically expressing transition of seasons by two characters with contrasting appearance.

"Winter" is in an ice ball which meant that she is refusing to talk with anyone, rather than staying alone and trapped herself in a shelter that protecting her. On the other hand, "Spring" is the one bringing hope and happiness and trying to rescue and help "Winter" from loneliness as spring usually representing positive and lively image. This artwork aims to express a story of a great friendship about saving one from loneliness and darkness.

"Spring" as the emphasis of the artwork as she is the brightest while contrasting with the black background and on the center of the artwork, attract the audience at first sight, leading the audience to the second focus point of the artwork which is "Winter". There are harmony in both up and down of the artwork where all the elements shared the same theme and topic, while creating balance in terms of visual hierarchy. On the other hand, this create contrast at the same time where warm tone at the top is contrasting with the cold tone at the bottom. Moreover, as I want to strengthen the movement of "Spring", I have added some petals in curvy lines along the way she is going so that her movement would be more obvious.

Feedback

Week 6
General Feedback: Remember to attach the jumplinks to Task 1 and 2 as well. Understand what message you want to convey through the artwork.

Specific feedback: "Spring" seems to be emphasis of the artwork instead of the ice ball. Need to include the ,messages I want to convey in the rationale. Good documentation progress.

Week 7
General Feedback: Complete the self reflective score and compiling all the blog post in one pdf to submit in final compilation.

Specific feedback: The title can add "Friendship:" in front the title as this is the main meaning of the artwork. Can compile the blog post and submit. Well done!!

Reflection

Experience
Throughout this task, I started to use my Procreate to draw again as I have been not using it for a long time. This task actually made me found my passion again for drawing!! From ideation to sketches, colouring and completing the whole drawing, this took a few days for me to complete, I did not face much problem during the progression. Dr Wong did give me a lot of good advice on improving my artwork and explanations on it.

Observation
In class, I also had the opportunity to look at other people's work. I have learnt the way that they improve or conduct the artwork from the original artwork. Also, I will improve my own artwork and blog based on the feedbacks given by Dr Wong to my classmates as well.

Findings
I found that applying design principles on artwork did enhance the artwork greatly and also manage to express the story and meaning of the artwork in a more effective way. In the past, I actually did not consider about applying design principles at all, I just draw what I like, what I feel good but it always lack of something, and now I know what it is!
