Task 2: Visual Analysis & Ideation

Selected Artwork
Fig 2.1 Selected artwork by Marui Michi

Title: 梅雨が終わったら一緒に遊びにいく約束 (We promised to go out together after the rainy season is over)
Artist: Marui Michi
Year: 17 July 2017
Size: 2871px x 3939px
Source: Twitter

Phase 1 Observation
This artwork is in portrait format while emphasizing the whole bubble as the central focus point on top of the artwork. The girl inside the bubble looked like she is being trapped and she is wearing a white cloak, dressed like a sunny doll. The two sunny doll behind her proved that she might be a sunny doll. All elements inside the bubble are all representing rainy season, while the boy's outfit representing summer. The background of the artwork is completely plain, other than white, there are mainly blue and green colour in this artwork, especially the bubble.

Phase 2 Analysis
Refer to fig 2.2, there is contrast between the world inside and outside the bubble that there are a lot of elements inside the bubble while outside the bubble there is just empty and plain. Only the elements inside the bubble have the most colours in the artowrk. Other than that, emphasis and balance also plays an important role in this drawing. The central focus which is the bubble is in a bigger size that could grab the audience's attention at the first sight. The bubble's size on this artwork has applied assymmetrical balance in terms of the artwork's proportion. Moreover, harmony also has been applied as all the elements inside the bubble have shared the same topic and atmosphere that works well together. This eventually leads to same theme and aesthetic in this artwork. Also, refer to fig 2.2, there are movement can be noticed which is the movement of the rope of the girl.

Phase 3 Interpretation
This artwork is from Marui Michi that has been posted on Twitter with her other artworks as well. When I first saw this artwork, I was attracted by the ambience and art style of this artwork. I feel quite sad as the story and meaning conveyed by this artwork shows a boy and a girl, who is a sunny doll cannot meet each other but still missing each other. The whole art style is stylized and clean and I think it is very interesting because it is created based on the artist's view and creativity towards summer and rainy season.

Sketches
I have done 3 sketches that inspired by the selected artwork and 3 of them are related to season as well.

Sketch #1
The first sketch is kind of similar concept with the selected artwork as it also have a bubble, but this actually not a bubble, instead is a ice in ball shape. The girl lying down represent Winter while the girl with flowers is Spring. The concept represent season changing, "Spring" want to wake "Winter" up from hibernation, but it can be interpreted as "Spring" want to save "Winter" from coldness as well. This sketch focus on emphasis, contrast and movement. I took the inspiration from Marui Michi's another artwork, which I think the composition is amazing.

Sketch #2
The second sketch has the same concept as sketch #1 just the composition is different and "Winter" is conscious now. This idea make the rescue concept more stand out, as "Winter" are falling into coldness and "Spring" try to save her out. This sketch focus more on movement and contrast as well. By having the characters in diagonal line, the movement of the characters become more obvious and the area of contrast (Winter) is bigger compare to sketch#1.

Sketch #3
For third sketch, this is another idea of "Autumn" and "Winter". This idea focus more on the contrast and balance part as both seasons has their own representative colours and plants. I make them looked like twins as this could make it looked more balance and also could be interpreted as four seasons have the same image and this is also inpired by the visual references.

Feedback

Week 4
General Feedback: For the visual analysis, it is better to include the image of the original artwork with indication of the design principles. Can either write the word or mentioning part 1,2,3. So that it could be reffered in the analysis.

Specific Feedback: Good job with the sketches, can proceed with the caption and explanation.

Week 5
General Feedback: Include the progression of how the sketches are done to make sure it's authentic, even if it is with pen and pencil it's alright.

Specific Feedback: Excellent work, just the visibility need to increase as when it was in the blog, the line looked a bit thin, lesser impact.

Reflection

Experience
I felt so happy because I get to know an amazing artist which is Marui Michi by browsing my inspirations on the Internet! I really like her art style very much and her imaginations and ideas are always azaming! Also, it takes some time for me to think about 3 different ideas for the sketches, as I already have one that i decided to go for it. But these 3 ideas did give me more explorations on the original artworks.

Observation
During the class, I managed to take a look of others' works as well. I not only learn about the artwork I have researching for but also explore about various other art style and my classmates' ways to interpret those artworks. Other than that, I have also observed the minor details on the artwork, and really try to understand what it is representing.

Findings
Along this task, I found out that every artwork should have a meaning behind it. As when I was drawing the sketch, not only applying the design principles, but I have also thought of the messages I inted to convey through my artwork. Through Marui Michi's artworks, we can actually see that the message she want to convey by looking at the artwork itself, no need to look for the explanations.
