Lectures

Week 7 asynchronous class materials

In this week, we have learned about colour correction and colour grading. The process of coloring digital video footage involves three steps:
  • establishing a picture profile
  • color correcting the footage
  • color grading the footage.
Color correction is a technical process that fixes color issues and makes footage appear as naturalistic as possible. The idea is for colors to look clean and real, as human eyes would see them in the real world.

Color grading is also technical, but it's more of a creative concern. The color grading process adds atmosphere and emotion to shots by coloring footage in new, often unnatural ways.

After learning about colour correction and colour grading in film, we have been given a quiz to test out our knowledge on it.

Project 2: Shooting Practise & Editing

Production Shoot:

In this project, we are required to shoot total 4 scenes with 7 shots. Mr Martin has provided the example of video clips from "Everything, everywhere, all at once" as our reference. Mr Martin has also provided a storyboard of every scenes with explanation of shot sizes and dialogues.

Fig 3.2 Stoyrboard provided for Production Shoot, Week 5 (24/5/24)

We were seperated in groups randomly, and after discussions we have decided on the roles allocation. We have been provided brief explanation on each role and their tasks so that we know what to do exactly on shooting day.

After we have done our shooting, Mr Martin has instructed us to proceed on downloading the footage and audio provided by our producer and editing a draft with synchronized dialogue. The arrangement of video clips no need to follow the storyboard given. We will need this rough cut for the colour correction and colour grading for the next class.

Also, we were provided with a tutorial on How to Auto Sync Audio with Video in Adobe Premiere Pro CC.
Fig 3.10 Audio syncing, Week 7 (5/6/24)

As instructed, we will need to colour grade our production shoot with the combination of below:
  • Teal & Orange,
  • Bluish (cold),
  • Greenish (cold),
  • Brownish (warm),
  • Desaturation, 50%-70%,
  • B & W, High Contrast
After the colour correction process, I started with colour grading of brownish scene. I have increase the temperature of this scene while adjusting the saturation and highlight of it.
Fig 3.11 Colour grading (brownish-warm), Week 7 (7/6/24)

I have applied video effect which is lens flare on this shot as I think it could enhance on this shot.
Fig 3.12 Adding lens flare effect, Week 7 (7/6/24)

For the greenish scene, I adjusted the tint to green and decrease the temperature so that it showcase a greenish and cold colour. Also, as the video is a bit dark, I have made changes on exposure, highlight and shadow to increase the brightness of the scene.
Fig 3.13 Colour grading (greenish-cold), Week 7 (7/6/24)

Here is another cold colour grading but bluish, therefore I adjust the temperature to cold.
Fig 3.14 Colour grading (bluish-cold), Week 7 (7/6/24)

As this shot is a bit shaky, I have apply warp stabilizer and adjust the scale and position of the frame as the same time so that the shot looked smooth.
Fig 3.15 Adjust on motion and stabilizer, Week 7 (7/6/24)

This frame I decided to colour grade it with desaturation 50%-70% and add video effect which is VR digital glitch.
Fig 3.16 Colour grading (desaturation) and adding glitching effect, Week 7 (7/6/24)

These shots are a bit dull so I have adjusted the brightness of them. These are scenes with teal and orange colour grading.
Fig 3.17 Colour correction, Week 7 (7/6/24)

Fig 3.18 Colour correction, Week 7 (7/6/24)

To make it teal and orange, I make the colour wheel for midtone and highlight become orange and the shadow become teal.
Fig 3.19 Colour grading (Teal & Orange), Week 7 (7/6/24)

After I done with the editing on fighting scene which is adjusting the speed, I decided to make the fighting scene become a mixture of black and white and normal colour. I have split them into several clips and edit them separately.
Fig 3.20 Colour grading (Black & White), Week 7 (7/6/24)

As the requirement mentioned the contrast should be high so I make the adjustment of contrast to 100.
Fig 3.21 Colour grading (Black & White - High contrast), Week 7 (7/6/24)

I have applied video transitions in between every video clips with different scenes such as cross dissolve, dip to lack, dip to white and VR light rays.
Fig 3.22 Video transitions, Week 7 (8/6/24)

Here is the timeline that include the editing of the texts, video clips and also audio. I have edited the dialogue and BGM to make sure dialogue sounds clearly while the BGM still going on.

I got my BGM from freesound website.

Shooting Progress
After I have done the planning of every scenes with the correct costumes, make ups and props needed, I started my progress on shooting. Here are all the video clips I have taken within one day. I have started to film this quite early during my free time on week 6.
Fig 3.26 Video clips taken, Week 6 (30/5/2024)

I have 2 different styles of looking after I finishing make up. As the theme of my video is Chinese style, I have prepared 2 different styles but both are based on Chinese style but different colour themes and feelings.

The first set is kind of elegant and graceful I would say, and the theme is white colour, so overall it is in a peaceful aura.

The second set is a bit more cool, especially with the sharp red colour flower and also the echoed colour of the red colour on the eye make up and also red dots beside the mouth.
Fig 3.27 First set of costume, Week 6 (30/5/2024)

Fig 3.28 Second set of costume, Week 6 (30/5/2024)

I have matched each style of the costume with corresponding make up, head ornament, earings, clothes and prop. I have bought different style of fan and earings to match the costume.

The make up I was referring to the example online, also I have added some minor decorations like small pearl to make it looked more delicate.
Fig 3.29 First set of costume, Week 6 (30/5/2024)

In this set of costume, I like how the red flowers and chinese hairpin match each other so well. The chinese hairpin, earings and fan I have bought them online as I do not have any similar items or colours that could match my costume. The make up style I also refered from online which I tried my best to create a real chinese style make up.
Fig 3.30 Second set of costume, Week 6 (30/5/2024)

Here are some different shots of "make up" scenes in the video:
Fig 3.31 Shots of different "make up" scenes in the video, Week 6 (30/5/2024)

Other sets of looking in the videos, I need quite a few different looking in the video to make some variations and also for the purpose of transition.
Fig 3.32 Other sets of looking in the video, Week 6 (30/5/2024)

Editing progress in Capcut
After I have done with my shooting part, I continue the editing part in Capcut started with improting all the footage that I have chosen. Then, I have done a rough cut align with the BGM.

After I have done putting all the clips together, I progressed with the colour grading. I have adjusted the first shot of the video to make it very low saturation and apply with black noise video effect to create a sad mode. Also, I have recorded some scripts along with the texts shown on the screen which convey a storyline that I was being bullied because I am not good looking enough.
Fig 3.33 Editing on first shot, Week 9 (21/6/2024)

Next, I proceeded with the next scene which is the scene before I start to transform. I have adjusted the colour by decreasing the saturation and other adjusments on contrast, brilliance and so on. Also, I have apply camera focus effect and key frames on the scale to make a zoom in zoom out effect.
Fig 3.34 Editing on second shot, Week 9 (21/6/2024)

Followed by the few steps of "make up" shots in sequence, I have also create some key frames on zooming in and out of the video.
Fig 3.35 Editing on "make up" scene in the video, Week 9 (21/6/2024)

For the "make up" scenes, I have applied different effects to match with the video which are glitter effect and glitch effect respectively.
Fig 3.36 Applying video effects, Week 9 (21/6/2024)

Of course, after receiving feedback from Mr Martin, I have applied transitions on my video to make it connect perfectly and looked more smooth. Mostly, I applied floodlight and zoom in transition effect. I apaplied zoom in effect for the part where I connecting different scenes of me opening the hand to show different looks.
Fig 3.37 Applying video transitions, Week 9 (21/6/2024)

Same goes to this scene, I have applied key frames on scale and also video effects to improve on it if not it will looked a bit too plain. The motion of the key frames are align with the BGM so I am zooming in and out of the video according to the beat of the BGM.
Fig 3.38 Editing on the shot before transormation, Week 9 (21/6/2024)

Before I showcasing the final successful make up transoformation, I have also done transition with the fan by using the fan to block the camera and cut it to the next shot.
Fig 3.39 Editing on viedo clips, Week 9 (21/6/2024)

For last 2 scenes I have also applied key frames and special video effects. The key frames are also applied according to the BGM and the video effects I have chosen it according to the style of costume. The one looked more cool I have chosen a fire flake effect while for the elegant style I have chosen a shining firework effect.
Fig 3.40 Editing on final 2 scenes, Week 9 (21/6/2024)

The BGM that I have used are the original audio used in the video and I have extracted it out. The tinnitus sound effect I have found some but this one I think is the most suitable one.
Fig 3.41 Editing on BGM and sound effects, Week 9 (21/6/2024)

Finally, I have exported it out with highest resolution and frame rate to make sure it is in a good quality.

Feedback

Insta/ Tiktok video:

Week 7: Can add a lot more special video effects or transitions, also take note of the saturation and colour of the video clips.

Week 9: Nothing much problem, just that the first shot of the video can be less saturated so that it could create a comparison after finishing make up.

Reflection

I really have a lot of fun while carrying out the project. I enjoyed a lot and also make some friends during the project.

For first exercise in this project, we have to shoot the scenes ourselves using the camera with the lighting and also sound, this is quite new for me although I have tried it before during FIA, but this time we need to edit it individually by ourselves also! I have learned some colour correction and colour grading skills which are really helpful for me in editing the video.

While for the second exercise, which I was more excited dfor it, as I always being the person that watched the tiktok instead of doing ti. Now I have to create a tiktok video by myself which I am a person that know NOTHING about video editing and only enjoy watching tiktok. When I watched at those super power tiktok video I always thinking OMG how they do that so pro, but I never want to be the one to try it out and now I have to do it. I thought I will be doing bad but I think it was better than what I thought, at least the outcome I was satisfied with it!! Creating a tiktok video is really harder than what I thought, I need to change so many times of clothes, and apply different make up and wash it off. It takes 5 hours for me to finish the shooting!

I have searched quite a few of very power video transitions effects but in the end I could not do it well therefore I gave up lol. I wish I could have a chance to really try it out next time:D but not now because there are too many assignments for me to busy with.
